Biomolecular dynamic properties probed by solution NMR

    Functions of biomolecules such as proteins and nucleic acids depend on their structures. However, these biomolecules are highly dynamic during biological processes and often interconvert among multiple conformations. Analyses of biomolecular dynamics are essential for a deep understanding of their structure-function relationship. Solution NMR method has unique advantages in analyzing the dynamic properties of biomolecules at the atomic level, while at the same time capturing the dynamic processes ranging from pico-second to second timescales, which is difficult for other biophysical techniques. In particular, recent progress in solution NMR made it more convenient to investigate the sparsely-populated, invisible conformational state. Herein, we summarized some commonly used NMR techniques in the studies of biomolecular dynamics and discuss a few examples of their applications.
